After the Japanese invasion at the Philippines on Dec. 8, 1941, he became a POW in Camp Davao, he was put on Transport to a POW Camp in Japan with the  “Hellship“ Shinyo Maru on Aug.20,1944.

The Shinyo Maru was attacked by the USS Paddle, thinking it was carrying enemy soldiers, the sub Torpedoed the ship on Sep. 7, 1944 off the coast on Mindanao, Philippines with 750 POW on board, only 68 Survived.

Joe is born on Dec. 10, 1913 in Labette County, Kansas.

Joe died on board the Shinyo Maru after being torpedoed on Sep. 7, 1944 off the Philipinnes Coast, he is honored with a Purple Heart, POW Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

Joe is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial Manila, metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
