The US started to built NAS Guam after the WWII, but was already begun to build it.

So on 10 December 1941 Japan invaded Guam’s shores and took over the island for the duration of World War II. The Americans who survived the Japanese attack were taken prisoner of war and sent to Japan.

Vernon enlisted the service in Oregon with service number # 3932935.

Vernon was KIA when the Naval Station got attacked by the Japanese on Dec. 10, 1941, he is honored with a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Expeditionary Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

Vernon is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial  Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
