Leonard died on the mission they last contacted the base at Chittagong when they were about 20 minutes east of Chittagong. They were not heard from or seen again. There were heavy thunderstorms in the area which may have caused them to crash. On April 13, 1945, he is honored with a Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Citation, Distinguished Flying Cross, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.
Leonard is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial Manila, metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
