The Imperial Japanese began their Invasion in the Philippines on 8 Dec 1941.
The Motor Transport Depot resorted to fighting as Infantry and was among American and Filipino forces, when compelled to surrender on 9 Apr 1942.
Second Lieutenant Abell became a POW and was imprisoned he later went on Transport to Japan with the “Hellship “Arisan Maru.

Gilbert died when he was on Transport to Japan with the ‘Hellship “Arisan Maru when it was Torpedoed by the USS Shark on Oct. 24, 1944, Second Lieutenant Gilbert R. Abell is honored with a Purple Heart, POW Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.
Gilbert is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
