Sam was KIA during combat with the Japanese Navy (she was part in sinking the Japanese cruiser Furutaka) during the Battle for Cape Esparance, on Okt. 12, 1942, he is honored with a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the WWII Victory Medal.

Sam is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial  Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
