Camp Cabanatuan(Pangatian)

After the Japanese occupation in 1942, the camp was converted by the Imperial Japanese Army into the Cabanatuan POW Camp. At its height, 8,000 prisoners were detained at this location. The prisoners also included some civilians including one British and one Norwegian citizen.  This POW Camp detained prisoners until liberated during the night of January 30, 1945.

The rectangular camp spanned roughly 25 acres and was 800 yards deep by 600 yards wide, divided by a road in the center. The camp consisted of a barracks for Japanese guards, barracks for prisoners, a hospital and water tower enclosed by barbed wire with guard towers.

 

Walter was born  in 1916 in Providence, Kent County, Rhode Island.

Robert Lee Pyles was a African-American, it was not usual that the position he had for that African-Americans did such jobs in the United States Army – all kinds of Job’s but rather no fighting allowed.

In this moment it was possible that a Navy mess attendant earned the Medal of Honor for ignoring his job and trying to shot down the Japanese enemy at Pearl Harbor.

Early in the morning of June 5, 1942, Captain Richard E. Fleming’s SB2U-3 Vindicator was hit and on fire as he continued his attack on the Japanese cruiser Mikuma. He maintained his dive, released his bomb and crashed directly into the cruiser. For this action he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
