The Imperial Japanese Army began their Invasion in the Philippines on 8 Dec 1941.

fighting as Infantry among American and Filipino forces on Corregidor when compelled to surrender on 9 Apr 1942.

Machinist’s Mate Second Class Allen became a POW and was imprisoned at Pow Camp Cabanatuan he died shortly after it.

The submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9) received severe damage when hit by heavy bombers on December 29, 1941. She lost six of her crew in the attack, with another six wounded. She was later scuttled off Manila Bay rather than face capture by the enemy.  Her crew was used in the defense of Corregidor.  A large number of her crew died in the Philippine Islands, other during transport to POW camps in Asia.

 

James is born on Oct. 31, 1915 in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky.

 

Mother, Elanor (Eader) Allen.

 

James enlisted the service in Kentucky with service number # 2871517.

 

 

James died as a POW in Camp Cabanatuan as a result from various disease’s on Oct. 20, 1942, he is honored with a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, POW Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.
