Camp Cabanatuan(Pangatian)

(former HQ 91st Philippine army Division)

After the Japanese occupation in 1942, the camp was converted by the Imperial Japanese Army into the Cabanatuan POW Camp. At its height, 8,000 prisoners were detained at this location. The prisoners also included some civilians including one British and one Norwegian citizen.  This POW Camp detained prisoners until liberated during the night of January 30, 1945.

The rectangular camp spanned roughly 25 acres and was 800 yards deep by 600 yards wide, divided by a road in the center. The camp consisted of a barracks for Japanese guards, barracks for prisoners, a hospital and water tower enclosed by barbed wire with guard towers.

Name and Rank, Aviation Machinist’s Mate Third Class Herman Riley Abbott.

Unit/Placed in, Patrol Squadron 51 (VP-51), United States Naval Reserve.

 

The PB4Y-1 Liberator was the Navy’s version of the Army Air Force B-24. Herman was part of a Patrol mission that included 9 PB4Y-1 Liberator’s, 10 P-38 Lightnings, and twelve F4U Corsairs. The entire group was attacked by 30 Japanese A6M Zeros & about 15 A6M2-N floatplanes. Two of the 9 PB4Y-1 Liberator’s, 4 P-38G’s, and 2 F4U-1 Corsair’s were lost in this mission. This mission became known as the “Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre” since that mission a total of 26 Navy and Air Force servicemen were lost.

 

Herman was born approx. on Oct. 18, 1915 in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Distinguished Service Cross is presented to Dale G. Maassen, Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Fourth Marine Raider Battalion in action against the enemy at Bairoko Harbor, New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 20 July 1943. Severely wounded a moment after taking over a machine gun when a member of his squad was fatally injured, Private First Class Maassen stayed at his post knowing that the continued operation of his weapon was essential to the movement of his company. Private Maassen died of the wounds he had ignored in order to deliver well-aimed fire when it was needed most.
