By 1943 when totally finished its build, it had become a major Naval Base for fleet submarines operating in the Pacific Ocean. Many submarines either used Midway to top off their supplies after leaving Pearl Harbor, US Territory of Hawaii and before heading into enemy waters, or used Midway for temporary repairs after returning from a war patrol.
