Camp Davao

Davao – Small port city on southeast coast of Mindanao. The POW camp was located some ten miles northwest of the port. Camp was closed in 1944 and the POWS were sent first to Cebu on the Yashu Maru. In Cebu, they were transferred to the Singoto Maru and moved to Manila and into Bilibid.

The Arisan Maru was a Hell Ships (former Cargo, used for Transport POW’s to other Camps) sunk on Nov. 24, 1944.

The Arisan Maru, sailed from Manila on October 11, 1944 for Japan. This ship was sunk by the American submarine, USS Shark with three torpedoes, on November 24, 1944. There were 1800 POWs aboard – nine men survived this sinking. Two days later, five of the survivors were rescued by a Chinese fishing junk. The Chinese helped them reach American Air Corps forces. Other survivors were recaptured by a Japanese destroyer and taken to Formosa.

This Hell Ship sank in the South China Sea making it the worst naval disaster in the history of the United States.

Camp Nielson Field (former “Filipino Army Airbase”)

The Imperial Japanese began their Invasion in the Philippines on 8 Dec 1941.

The Serviceman resorted to fighting together among American and Filipino forces when compelled to surrender on 9 Apr 1942.

He became a POW and was imprisoned at Pow Camp Nielson Field (no record)near Clark Field, and went on transport to Japan with the “Hellship Arisan Maru” but they never arrived.

Camp Cabanatuan(Pangatian)

(former HQ 91st Philippine army Division)

After the Japanese occupation in 1942, the camp was converted by the Imperial Japanese Army into the Cabanatuan POW Camp. At its height, 8,000 prisoners were detained at this location. The prisoners also included some civilians including one British and one Norwegian citizen.  This POW Camp detained prisoners until liberated during the night of January 30, 1945.

The rectangular camp spanned roughly 25 acres and was 800 yards deep by 600 yards wide, divided by a road in the center. The camp consisted of a barracks for Japanese guards, barracks for prisoners, a hospital and water tower enclosed by barbed wire with guard towers.

Camp Bilibid

Former Civilian prisoners converted the Prison to a POW camp, hospital and transit Camp for POWS. Almost every man captured on Corregidor passed through this camp at one time or another. As it was a transit point for movement to other camps First major use as transit point for high ranking officers from Bataan and for all men from Corregidor. He became a POW and was imprisoned at Pow Camp Bilibid (Manila) he survived the Bataan Death March, but died shortly after it.

USS Canopus AS-9

The submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9) received severe damage when hit by heavy bombers on December 29, 1941. She lost six of her crew in the attack, with another six wounded. She was later scuttled off Manila Bay rather than face capture by the enemy.  Her crew was used in the defense of Bataan and Corregidor.  A large number of her crew died in the Philippine Islands, during transport to POW camps in Japan, or in the camps themselves.

Camp#8 Bachrach, Manila

The POW Camp was inhabited and also used as a Labor camp to repaired trucks, cars, etc. The Camp was created in early 1943 and was active to early October, 1944. When it became clear to the Japanese that the Americans were about to invade the Philippines, the POWs were marched to the Port Area of Manila and boarded onto the Arisan Maru, Its presumed of this files that there are no survivors. The Imperial Japanese began their Invasion in the Philippines on 8 Dec 1941.

The Ha1. Roy E. Elvin resorted to fighting together among American and Filipino forces when compelled to surrender on 9 Apr 1942.

Ha1. Roy E. Avery became a POW and was imprisoned at Pow Camp no record, he survived the Bataan Death March.

Arisan Maru

The Arisan Maru was a Hell Ships (former Cargo, used for Transport POW’s to other Camps) sunk on Nov. 24, 1944.

The Arisan Maru, sailed from Manila on October 11, 1944 for Japan. This ship was sunk by the American submarine, USS Shark with three torpedoes, on November 24, 1944. There were 1800 POWs aboard – nine men survived this sinking. Two days later, five of the survivors were rescued by a Chinese fishing junk. The Chinese helped them reach American Air Corps forces. Other survivors were recaptured by a Japanese destroyer and taken to Formosa.

This Hell Ship sank in the South China Sea making it the worst naval disaster in the history of the United States.
