Silver Star

AWARDED FOR ACTIONS

DURING World War II

Service: Marine Corps

Rank: Second Lieutenant

Battalion: 3d Battalion

Division: 1st Marine Division

GENERAL ORDERS:

CITATION:

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant John Francis Barrett, Jr. (MCSN: 0-23470), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader attached to Company K, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, on 15 September 1944. Leading his platoon against strongly held enemy positions guarding Peleliu Airfield, Second Lieutenant Barrett encountered fierce rifle and machine gun opposition from enemy pillboxes located across a road parallel to the platoon’s front which caused heavy casualties in his two assault squads and completely halted their advance. After a personal reconnaissance of his platoon’s position, he left his assault squads under command of his platoon sergeant and led his support squad to the left in an attempt to outflank the enemy and attack from the rear. When a hostile mortar barrage caused heavy casualties and disorganized his flanking unit as he was leading it into position to cross the road, Second Lieutenant Barrett quickly rallied the remaining men and charged forward into the midst of the Japanese positions, launching a devastating, close-range attack with hand grenade and carbine fire until he himself fell, mortally wounded. Continuing to direct his men despite his wounds until the hostile strong point was entirely annihilated, Second Lieutenant Barrett, by his inspiring leadership, outstanding fortitude and valiant fighting spirit, had enabled his platoon to continue its successful attacks on the enemy positions and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Navy Cross

AWARDED FOR ACTIONS
DURING World War II
Service: Navy
Division: U.S.S. Growler (SS-215)
GENERAL ORDERS:

CITATION:

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Commander Thomas Benjamin Oakley, Jr. (NSN: 0-73499), United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. GROWLER (SS-215), on the TENTH War Patrol of that submarine during the period 11 August 1944 to 26 September 1944, in enemy controlled waters of the Southwest Pacific. Striking fiercely at a large Japanese convoy in a daring night surface action, Commander Oakley delivered a fast bow attack, sinking a tanker and damaging a freighter, then, swinging hard right under terrific shellfire, shot four stern torpedoes point blank at an aggressive destroyer, exploding the target in billows of smoke. Threatened with depth-charging and under furious surface attack, he remained surfaced while skillfully evading the persistent counterfire and submerged just before dawn to make his escape undamaged. Warned of the approach of a second heavily-escorted convoy, he attacked from dead ahead of the starboard column, firing three down-the-throat shots at a destroyer bearing down on a collision course, executed a sharp maneuver hard left, fired his stern tubes at two overlapping merchantmen to score heavy damage on both, and swung hard left again in time to see the blazing man-of-war sink a short 200 yards off his port side. Undaunted, he cleared the area under heavy fire while still surfaced and, a few hours after daylight, sighted a third destroyer searching the scene of earlier action. Immediately submerging, he rigged for depth-charging, conducted a brilliant close-range periscope attack and plunged deep to register through the GROWLER’s hull the shattering concussions of his death-dealing torpedoes as they struck the target and exploded. His superb ship handling and indomitable fighting spirit in achieving this outstanding record reflect the highest credit upon commander Oakley, his gallant ship’s company and the United States Naval Service.

S/Sgt Ibea and the other men of the 978th Signal Service Company who boarded the USS Seawolf were specially trained in jungle survival and jungle warfare skills in Australia.  They were using the US Navy Submarine base as their departure point for insertion into the Philippines via submarine.

The 978th Signal Services Company was created to handle secret underground radio communication with the Philippines. It functioned as the net control station for all the Philippine traffic, operating both the radio station and message center, and sent secret “Mission Men” into the islands mainly to build and operate radio stations through which military intelligence would be sent into the islands prior to the invasions.  In essence they were a version of the OSS but handled entirely withing the Army.

On September 21, 1944, the Seawolf left Brisbane and arrived at the Manus Island submarine base on September 29, 1944, where she embarked a seventeen-man army reconnaissance party and supplies. After topping off her fuel, she sailed the same day to land them on Samar Island in the Philippines, north of General Douglas MacArthur’s planned invasion site on Leyte Island.

On October 3, 1944, the Seawolf exchanged recognition signals by radar with the USS Narwhal. Both boats were in a safety lane in which American surface forces were prohibited from attacking any submarine unless it was positively identified as an enemy.

Three hours later, one of the USS St. Lo’s aircraft sighted a submarine in the safety lane and dropped two bombs and dye marked its position as the boat submerged. The destroyer escort USS Rowell got to the scene and detected the submarine on sonar. The sonar operator reported his equipment was receiving signals consisting of long dots and dashes from the submarine. The Rowell’s commander dismissed these as an attempt to jam his sonar and pressed on with firing projector mortars. The Rowell reported, “Three explosions heard. Two large bubbles observed off port beam. Debris observed in the bubbels.

Four US submarines were in the safety lane at the time of these events. Urgent calls from the surface forces to the submarines to report their positions brought responses from three of them, but there was only silence from the Seawolf.  At that point it became obvious that the submarine the Rowell had sunk was the Seawolf and not the RO-41.

The 32nd Infantry Division was an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard that fought primarily during World War I and World War II.

During World War II, the Division was credited with many “firsts”. It was the first United States division to deploy as an entire unit overseas and among the first of seven U.S. Army and U.S. Marine units to engage in offensive ground combat operations during 1942. The division was among the first divisions to enter the war and were still engaging Japanese soldiers after the official Japanese surrender. The 32nd logged a total of 654 days of combat during World War II, more than any other United States Army division. The unit was inactivated in 1946 after occupation duty in Japan.
Note: The adoption of the nickname and unit insignia of the “Red Arrow” piercing a bar came at the end of World War I when an officer commented that the division “shot through every line the Germans put before it.”
