Alden Augustus Carter

Silver Star

AWARDED FOR ACTIONS

DURING World War II

Service: Marine Corps

Rank: Corporal

Battalion: 3d Battalion

Division: 1st Marine Division

GENERAL ORDERS:

Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 01530 (March 22, 1945)

CITATION:

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Alden Augustus Carter (MCSN: 321495), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Peleliu, Palau Islands, on 24 September 1944. Assigned the mission of defending a strategic position on a mountainous sector affording no protection and surrounded by bare coral reefs and jagged rocks, Corporal Carter moved his squad to a protected position in the rear and, despite the extreme danger, went forward alone to observe the activities of the enemy. Concerned only for the safety of his men, he remained at his post for a period of two days, maintaining a constant vigilance over the vital ridge and accounting for five Japanese.
