Silver Star Award

Richard L. Steele

HOME OF RECORD:

Shell Beach, California

AWARDS BY DATE OF ACTION:1 of 1

Silver Star

AWARDED FOR ACTIONS

DURING World War II

Service: Army

Division: 37th Infantry Division

GENERAL ORDERS:

Headquarters, 37th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 170 (July 2, 1945)

CITATION:

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Richard L. Steele (ASN: 39569602), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands. When his platoon suddenly received heavy small arms fire from the left flank on 22 April 1945, Private Steele voluntarily moved forward and, by making full use of the sparse cover, advanced to within 25 yards of the enemy emplacement. Throwing five hand grenades into the position, he caused three known casualties and facilitated the advance of his unit. Later he exposed himself to enemy fire on three different occasions, so that his platoon could locate and bring fire upon hostile positions. Private Steele’s gallant and aggressive actions aided greatly in the final reduction of the enemy emplacements. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
