He was killed when the ship and his unit  was hit by a kamikaze attack on 12 January, 1945  in the Philippines,  Many men from his unit were killed or are missing in this attack.

Off the west coast of Luzon, kamikazes damaged the destroyer escorts USS Richard W. Suesens (DE 342) and USS Gilligan (DE 508), the attack transport USS Zeilin (APA 3), and the tank landing ship LST-700. Kamikazes targeted U.S. merchant ships, damaging the freighters Elmira Victory, the Edward M. Wescott off the west coast of Luzon, the Kyle V. Johnson, (on board which 129 of 506 Army troops, being transported were killed) and the David Dudley Field at Subic Bay. Friendly fire accounted for damage to the high speed transport USS Sands (APD 13) and the tank landing ships LST-710 and LST-778.
