Gilbert was normally assigned to the 1st Resupply Squadron, 443rd Troop Carrier Group, but was assigned to the above group for this day.

A “Kicker” kicked  or pushed supplies being dropped via parachutes (or free drop)  out the door when a plane was over the drop zone.

 

Gilbert was KIA (supposed) the plane flew into a mountain or blew up (load was gasoline in drums) on June 18, 1945, he is honored with an Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with  2 Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Distinguished Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.

 

Gilbert is buried/mentioned at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
