The carriers then headed north and struck the Japanese base at Truk on 29 April. BELLEAU WOOD covered strikes launched by other carriers with her usual CAP and ASP flights. The next day, her task group turned toward Ponape in the Caroline Islands, and she launched fighter sweeps in conjunction with a bombardment of the island by American battleships on 1 May. The warships then steamed to the Marshalls, arriving in Kwajalein lagoon on 4 May. Two “Avengers,” one “Hellcat,” and their crews were lost during these operations.
29 April 1944 Strike #2D, 4 aircraft launched at 1300 for a general-purpose bombing strike on Satawan Atoll. Pilot Lieutenant(jg) E. W. Wood, Jr A-V(N), USNR with Carter, A.D., ARM2c and Wagenkecnt, R. B. AOM2c. Some large, rectangular buildings resembling barracks were observed on Etal Island (Etal or Ettal is an island and municipality in the state of Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia), As Lieutenant was pulling out of his last dive at an altitude of approximately 1500 feet after releasing his bombs, his plane was apparently hit by light A/A from one of several positions located in a marshy area between the North end of the runway and the North point of the island. Lieutenant(jg) Wood’s plane pulled up sharply, trailing a long cloud of vapor, to a height of approximately 2000 feet, then rolled over on its back and plunged straight down into the water. A thorough search of the scene of the crash, which was observed by witnesses and marked by an oil slick, was made but no survivors were observed. There was no fire.
