The plane was shot down by Zeros over Bougainville and crashed into Shortland Harbor area, on Feb. 1, 1943, he is honored with an Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Silver Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WW II Victory Medal.
Peter is buried at Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Metro Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines.
