WWII Story in the Mediterranean and France.
On 1 April 1942 he left Staten Island, New York he had together with the 36th Division boarded the USAT Monterey Troopship to Oran, Algeria were he arrived on 12 April 1942.
A few weeks later he left Oran with the SS. Mexico Victory for Salerno, Italy.
On his arrival he walked with the present troops the 30 miles to the south of Naples were the R&R, Rest camps, “The 29 Replacements Depots” he remained there for 6 months because of misplaced papers.
On 9 Sept. 1943 He took part in Italian Campaign, the invasion of Sicily
The invasion of Sicily in July 1943 led to the collapse of the Fascist Italian regime and the fall of Mussolini.
With the Landings by the Allied Forces at Salerno.
The Germans launched numerous fierce counterattacks on 12–14 September, with no luck.
The division attacked and crossed the Gari River on 20 January but was harshly repulsed by the 15th Panzergrenadier Division.
In 48 hours, the 36th Division had sustained 1,681 casualties, Division losses until the end of January 1944 was of 2,255 battle casualties

On 15 August 1944, as part of the U.S. 6th Army Group, the division made another amphibious assault landing, against light opposition in the Saint-Raphaël-Fréjus area of southern France as part of Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of Southern France. A rapid advance opened the Rhone River Valley. Montelimar fell, 28 August, and large German units were trapped
Robert started as Medic Detachment in the 142nd Infantry Regiment,
on 9 Sept. 1944 to 3 Nov. 1944.
They pained a Red Cross on his helmet, stitching wounds and rationing Morphine, and saw lots of dead Soldiers.
On 15 September, the division was attached to the French First Army. The 36th advanced to the Moselle River at Remiremont and the foothills of the Vosges.
On 30 September, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (442nd RCT, a Japanese-American unit) was assigned to the 36th to help shore up the division.
In December 1944 he got badly wounded by fragments from a Mortar blast, patched up at the Hospital but the pain remained.
On 20 December they went to attack Haguenau and cross the Rhine,
When Robert had crossed the Rhine they were captured by German Soldiers from the 19th Heeres Korps,
and sent to the POW Camp Kaufering near München.
He was Liberated on 3 April 1945 by the 63e Infantry Division.
